The $249 Question for California Entities

Recognition Is Worth Something

Nobody needs this explained, but it deserves saying plainly: LegalZoom is the name people already know. When legal paperwork makes somebody uneasy, hiring a company their accountant has heard of removes a real anxiety, and that comfort is a genuine product. Their platform is broad, their support infrastructure is large, and choosing them is not a mistake anyone should be embarrassed about.

$249 a Year, and It Renews Itself

Registered agent service at LegalZoom is $249 annually. The rate is flat, it auto-renews, and we found no first-year discount attached to it during our July 2026 review. That structure at least has the virtue of clarity, since nothing expires and nothing converts into a higher figure later.

What the $249 does not purchase is a different statutory outcome. California defines this role tightly and defines it once. Your agent keeps a California street address, stays reachable there during ordinary business hours, and takes delivery of summonses and of whatever the Secretary of State sends your company. Any provider selling into this market meets that standard or it would not be selling here. The gap between $249 and $99 is not buying a more effective address.

That is $750 across five years. For a California LLC the figure lands close to something you already recognise, since the Franchise Tax Board takes an $800 minimum franchise tax from your company every year regardless of profit. One of those two payments is compulsory. The other is a shopping decision you make once and then stop revisiting.

That last part is where automatic renewal does its quiet work. A charge nobody re-approves each year survives on inertia instead of merit, and five straight years of inertia turn an unremarkable annual gap into a figure that would have given you pause had it arrived all at once.

The Case for the Cheaper Line

Our version is $99 for the first year and $99 for the ninth. Anything served on us in California is imaged before the office closes that same day and emailed straight out, with a copy filed in your portal. Your public record carries our California address in the agent field rather than yours. Statement of Information deadline alerts are part of the fee. The only add-on we sell is $15 per item for scanning mail that is not legal process, and it is printed before you buy rather than after.

For accuracy: $99 is not the lowest sticker in California. BetterLegal advertises $90, a rate our own rankings place ahead of ours. What we hold is a position among the lowest flat annual prices in the state, which is the whole of the claim.

Beating the Auto-Renewal With a California Filing

California hands you a small structural advantage here, and the trick is using it before the card gets charged rather than afterward.

Start with the mechanics, because they surprise people. There is no change of agent form in California. The Secretary of State does not publish one, so hunting the forms list for something with that title is wasted effort. Instead, the agent is replaced by filing an updated Statement of Information naming the new one: Form LLC-12 for a limited liability company, Form SI-550 for a stock corporation, Form SI-100 for a nonprofit. Filings go to the Business Programs Division through the bizfileOnline portal, and the incoming agent's consent is captured inside the statement itself, so nothing separate needs signing and mailing.

Then the fee, which follows the timing. File that statement outside your scheduled filing periods, for the sole purpose of recording the change, and California charges $0. Roll the change into your regular biennial filing instead and you pay only the standard $20 an LLC owes anyway, or $25 for a corporation's annual statement. Either route, the state adds nothing for the agent swap itself.

Sequence matters more than speed. Hire the replacement first, because the statement asks for that agent's exact name and California street address and cannot be completed truthfully without it. File second. Confirm third, on the Secretary of State's business search, which is the moment the handoff genuinely exists. Only then cancel with LegalZoom, and do all of it comfortably ahead of your renewal date, since the half that costs $249 is the half that happens by itself if left alone.
