Our interest, declared at the top: CA Registered Agent.org runs this page and sells California agent service, so the recommendation at the end is not a neutral one. Rocket Lawyer's pricing is theirs, published, and easy to confirm.

The Price Does Not Play Tricks

For registered agent service Rocket Lawyer asks $125 annually, and that figure held at every membership level we examined. No introductory term, no tier that quietly unlocks a discount, no split billing cycle to unwind before you can compare anything. Teaser rates are close to standard practice in this corner of the market, so a price that simply refuses to move is worth acknowledging out loud, and we would sooner compete with it than grumble about it.

A Platform With an Agent Inside It

Rocket Lawyer sells a legal platform. Document templates, attorney questions, a subscription built on the assumption you will keep coming back. Registered agent service is one shelf inside that store, priced consistently and bundled deliberately. Open the other shelves regularly and the arrangement is good value, which is the entire logic of bundling.

Plenty of California owners never do. A single-member LLC whose operating agreement is long since settled, working with an accountant it already relies on, draws exactly one thing from that platform: a California address willing to take delivery of a summons. Nothing scandalous attaches to paying for the rest. It is simply spending on capacity that goes unused.

What California Actually Asks of the Role

Being precise about the job clarifies the purchase. Under Cal. Corp. Code § 17701.13, an LLC has to name an agent for service of process, which is the statutory label California puts on a registered agent, and keep that designation live at all times alongside an in-state office. That agent needs a street address inside California, needs to be reachable there during normal business hours, and needs to handle whatever a process server or the Secretary of State delivers. Eligibility is narrow, too: an individual who resides in California, or a corporation carrying a certificate filed under Corp. Code § 1505. Your own company cannot fill the slot, because the Secretary of State does not let an entity appoint itself to the role.

That is the assignment in full. It does not widen because you bought a bigger subscription, and it does not shrink because you bought a smaller one.

That bottom row swings both ways, and we intend it to. If twenty six dollars a year is a fair price for platform access you will genuinely use, buy Rocket Lawyer and stop reading. If you will never log in, you are renting floor space you do not walk on.

The Statutory Part on Its Own

Ninety-nine dollars a year, renewing at the identical figure, for the role and the handling that surrounds it. Legal papers get scanned on arrival day and reach you by email, with a permanent copy kept in the portal. Our California street address occupies the agent field of your public record in place of your own. Alerts before the Statement of Information window closes come inside the fee rather than in a compliance tier above it. Scanning routine correspondence that is not legal process runs $15 an item, and nothing else is charged.

If price alone decides this, look at BetterLegal as well, whose published $90 undercuts us by nine dollars. What we offer is a place near the bottom of the California range with no conditions attached to it.

Changing Agents Without Touching Your Subscription

The two decisions are separate, and California lets you take them in whichever order suits you. Replacing the agent means refiling the Statement of Information, which is the LLC-12 if your entity is a limited liability company, at bizfileOnline with the new name and California address entered. The state publishes no dedicated change form, so that statement is the whole mechanism, and outside your regular filing periods it costs nothing to submit. Appointment first, filing second, and your subscription decisions whenever you feel like making them, since the record kept by the state is what has to stay continuously covered and a billing relationship is no part of it. Our California switching guide sets out each step.
