For registered agent service Rocket Lawyer asks $125 annually, and that figure held at every membership level we examined. No introductory term, no tier that quietly unlocks a discount, no split billing cycle to unwind before you can compare anything. Teaser rates are close to standard practice in this corner of the market, so a price that simply refuses to move is worth acknowledging out loud, and we would sooner compete with it than grumble about it.

A Platform With an Agent Inside It

Rocket Lawyer sells a legal platform. Document templates, attorney questions, a subscription built on the assumption you will keep coming back. Registered agent service is one shelf inside that store, priced consistently and bundled deliberately. Open the other shelves regularly and the arrangement is good value, which is the entire logic of bundling.

Plenty of California owners never do. A single-member LLC whose operating agreement is long since settled, working with an accountant it already relies on, draws exactly one thing from that platform: a California address willing to take delivery of a summons. Nothing scandalous attaches to paying for the rest. It is simply spending on capacity that goes unused.

What California Actually Asks of the Role

Being precise about the job clarifies the purchase. Under Cal. Corp. Code § 17701.13, an LLC has to name an agent for service of process, which is the statutory label California puts on a registered agent, and keep that designation live at all times alongside an in-state office. That agent needs a street address inside California, needs to be reachable there during normal business hours, and needs to handle whatever a process server or the Secretary of State delivers. Eligibility is narrow, too: an individual who resides in California, or a corporation carrying a certificate filed under Corp. Code § 1505. Your own company cannot fill the slot, because the Secretary of State does not let an entity appoint itself to the role.

That is the assignment in full. It does not widen because you bought a bigger subscription, and it does not shrink because you bought a smaller one.
