Treat our opinions as interested ones. The ZenBusiness figures come off their published pricing and take less time to verify than this paragraph took to read.

The Software Genuinely Is Good

ZenBusiness builds the nicest console in this category, and we would rather say so than pretend the choice is obvious. Formation paperwork, filing status, and incoming agent mail arrive in one place that behaves like a product somebody actually designed. If what you want is a general business admin hub with the agent slot filled as one tile among several, that purchase makes sense on its own terms.

Then the Rate Steps Up

Purchased on its own, detached from any formation bundle, the ZenBusiness agent product carries an advertised opening term of $99 plus state fees. After that it renews annually at $199. Both numbers are published and both are accurate. Only the second one describes what a California LLC pays across its life, because the state expects an agent on file for as long as the entity keeps breathing.

Nothing about the underlying work shifts between the first invoice and the second. California asks the agent to hold a street address inside the state and be present at it during business hours so a process server has somewhere to hand a summons. That assignment reads identically at $99 and at $199, which is why the renewal figure is the honest basis for any comparison you make.

Four hundred dollars across five years, for a duty written the same way in both columns. Notice the phrase hanging off the opening ZenBusiness figure, too. "Plus state fees" means the amount your card is charged depends on which filings ride along with the order, so the number you see quoted is not the number you pay. Ours is $99 and it stops there.

Most switching guides tell you to download your state's change of agent form. California publishes no such document. Lodge it outside your scheduled filing periods, for the single purpose of recording the change, and it carries no fee whatsoever.
